Hey! Im getting a 20g tank soon and i was wondering what kind of tropical fish and how many should i get? Also one more thing, what tempature should i keep the water at? Thanks for your help!
Hi bud you are very limited in your choice, perhaps some threadfin rainbows or perhaps a siamese fighter(only one!) and some cory cat fish and see how you get on,and dont forget the pics
Check out some local fish stores, find a few species you like and come back here to see if they would be appropriate for your tank. Some ideas to start with are some of the smaller tetras and corydoras species
That sounds like a great idea! I'd recommend a filter that doesn't create much current as bettas like calm water. A small canister could achieve this, or you could use a sponge filter run by an air pump since the bioload will be so low. With the betta, you could also add a small group of panda or pygmy cories and still have a pretty low bioload for that tank. It would be a good idea to give the betta some places to hide, but he'll also probably use open swimming room too. A betta will love all that space
20H or 20L ? the tank dimensions can make a difference as to what you can/can't keep. siamese fighter would do well w/ that much room. I would agree with AndyJS Go window shopping at your local LFS and get an idea of what you like before making any decisions. also figure out what kind of set-up you like. setting the tank to keep your ifsh happy is always the way to go. Bettas do have a 2-5yr life span in general. and a nice low light planted set-up can look nice for these fish w/ a few cory cats, or other smaller bottom dwellers can make an interesting set-up. Bettas in my experiance tend to do very well in an unheated tank in a 60-80 deg house. also due to their labyrinth breathing system any decent sized water/air temp differences can hurt these guys ime. putting a heater in and setting it to 68-72 to keep the water from dropping to low if you let your house run fairly cool at night is a nice precaution but imo not needed.
What filtration do you have? intend to use?
depending how new/old you are to the hobby you may find other species of fish that catch your fancy far more then a betta, or it may be the ideal fish for you. I have 3 20gals 2 20H's and 1 20L and thay are all stocked very differently.
There is actually a large assortment fo fish well within' your tanks size. The hard part is knowning them when you see them. Most livebearers would do well. some of the smaller schooling tetras would be fine, there are a large variety of small catfish/catfish type fish/ loaches. And a plethera of oddballs that would also be very happy in this size tank. Not to mentions Cichlids of various species that would be quite content as well.
Cruise the forums, check out your local LFS, and find some fish big or small that interest you. and why I say big or small.. their are alot of pint size fish w/ big fish personalities, or particular personalities ect. People can help you much better when you have it narrowed down to an idea of what you want the tank/fish to be.
