I have a 75g that i am setting up, and i want to get a frontosa colony going. Can anyone recommend which type to go with? I would love a very vivid colony, but i don't want to spend an arm and a leg.

Thanks :)

They're slow growers and if you buy em small you could get 10 in there since you're planning to move and get a bigger tank. They'd be good for at least a year in there

Kapampa are very nice.

It all depends on what you want to do with them.
Are you going to breed them and sell the fry? Or do you just want a nice looking group?

It takes a long time to get them to breed "years and years" and if you want top dollar for your fry then you should buy wild caught or some fry from wild caught "f1".

If you get f1's then you should raise your group up, removing the males every once in awhile. Then eventually you can buy a big F1 male from a differnt source for stud.

My point being:
If your committing to a long term plan then you should start out with the best stock possible.

I had a juvi group of Kapampa's that I sold and regret it. They were true F1's cost me $17 a peice a few years ago.

Breeding them for profit isn't a big deal to me. I DO plan to keep them for a long time. And i definitely want to start out with the best stock that i can afford. I can start small and all that jazz and can be patient.

The biggest deal for me is color. I just want them to be as pretty as possible :)

I guess what i am asking is, if i had a budget of say $150 or so for a few frontosa, what should i be looking to get? I'm looking for a specific type, a specific amount, or a "save your money for a little longer" type answer.

Very good info there.

IMO even if you're not looking to breed I would plan with it in mind that if it did happen your fry would at least be worth something. Shopping around zaire's/moba's/mpimbwe will be easier than burundi.

two good sites for selling fronts:

http://www.zaireblue.com/ (don't have much in stock presently)

http://www.tntcichlids.com/

I would at least go with Mpimbwe wild/f1 they will be IMO the cheapest that actually should color up really nice. If you got extra money spring for Moba/Zaire. Burundi/7 stripe are cheap but I haven't see a whole lot of them with great color and there isn't alot of fresh blood out there, most are captive bred many times over which is bad for gene's.

I welcome the idea of them breeding, and when it comes time will definitely be prepared for it.

But right now the main goal is to start out with the best stock i possibly can.
