Random, I know. Does it matter what kind of light they get? Getting ready to get him another tank upgrade and want to make sure I get the right thing.

BTW, large mouths give the biggest smiles. :D

Fish would probably be happier without a light but that defeats the purpose of keeping fish. That being said no, the light doesnt matter unless you want to keep live plants also.

The nicest lighting I've ever seen with a largemouth was in a 4ft tank. It was a 4 bulb t5 fixture with 2 6700k bulbs and 2 actinics. It really made everything pop

Do they not need lights for health purposes? He just looks a little pale?

A lot of fish enjoy some lighting, this is why the become day active and relax when lights are out

In the wild most fish spend the days in shade or deep water and a common way to reduce stress is shutting off tank lights but it is pointless to argue.

To the OP... no. They do not need any sort of special lighting. Color comes and goes depending on many factors and fish in the dark tend to turn pale but it does not mean they are unhealthy. Spend as much on a light as you want until you are happy viewing your fish. Just know not all lights are created equally and good lighting can bring out the best color in your fish

I'm not here to argue but my 500,000 gallon pond is stocked with largemouth and on sunny days they swim in small schools in the middle of the pond. There's a ton of bullrushes, sunken logs, and docks for structure and yet they are still out in the middle. I feel fish do enjoy lighting.

I have noticed that at ponds too- they'll sit out in the middle and sunbathe. He's getting a good lamp soon, and a good place to hide.
