I have a 125 gal freshwater tank, im planning on doing a 30 gal sump with an overflow that's drilled. what kind of pump would I use to get the water from the sump into the tank?

Any thing in the 500gph to 1200 gph range works for me.
But a lot depends on the diameter size of pipe you use to bring water back to the sump.
If 1.5"- 2" pipe, any of the above ranges should work, and work well for cichlids, but some appreciate more flow than others. If a riverine species, they can take plenty, a lake or lagoon type may like less flow.
I have used Mag drive pumps, that have easily obtainable spare parts and have run for years 24/7, and create a bit of heat and noise.
Lately I have been switching to Laguna, they are a little cheaper, quieter and use less electricity, and seem to create less heat. I have not had them long enough to determine reliability, and/or ease of getting repair parts when needed. They also have a large screen type cage that surrounds the pump, and helps keep debris out. I use the 2000+gph models on my 300 gal line of tanks.
Beelow is a Laguna in a 30 gal sump

Mags are bulletproof, but not the most efficient. I'm running Mags and a few Quiet Ones and they are solid pumps. Might check out the Lagunas next from an efficiency standpoint.

well i always thought that eheim was energy efficiency but after reading Laguna's page i fell in love with their pumps.. i have 2 1262 pumps from eheim which each draws 85watts pumping at 0 head at 900 gph.. with laguna 2400 (2400gph) 0 head it only draws 100watts.. i have very little issues with eheim since they have their own reputations from hobbist.. the issues with their new pumps coming out from eheim is poor craftsmanship.. i notices other fellow MFers have this issue with solveable problems.. i just used the laguna for 2months without any issues yet (submerised in water).. but eheims was external pump so cant tell...
