Stopped by a lfs today and saw they have a ~6"-7" rhom in a tinny tank (probably just 0.5 gallon) and selling for $80.
it had really nice rube red eyes, has small amount of yellow/orange/red color on the lower gill plate and throat. the body is a little silverish above lateral line and has very little tint of light blue below lateral line, can't really get a good look of the color cuz it's always facing away from me. I also see some sparkely scales but can't be sure.

asked the guy at store to turn the fish a little with a net but that doesn't help much cuz that just drove the fish crazy.

I almost had the impulse of buying it but unfortunately I managed to control myself. that thought of getting that bad boy home is still pondering inside of my head.

only managed to take couple crappy pics with my cell phone and the glass is really dirty there, not sure if it'll help ID the fish (probably not). I hope it’s some kind of diamond then I will have more reason to convince myself.

If you're trying to figure out where it was collected through visual identification only...(Peru Rhom, Guyana Rhom, Xingu Rhom, Vinnie...) Thats impossible. There is no way to tell.

As the fish ages, it can be possible to determine if its a diamond varient but thats about it.

If he's got what your looking for, I'd say go for it. The eyes are always what does me in. I'm a sucker for a Rhombeus too and to walk away from that one, being held in that small of a tank...Theres no way I'd make it out of the store without a new fish.
You guys in NJ make me jealous.

The only reason I walked out of the store without the fish is I won't make it pass my wife since we just had our first baby boy. The two employees at the lfs knows nothing about piranhas so I'll try to talk to the owner when he comes in, they sound like he knows more about where they got the fish from. hopefully he knows the collection point.

being that size, how long will he be comfortable in a 55g? that's the only one I can free up and I don't think I'll be able to get any more tanks any time soon.

they also have couple 2-3" pirayas, some 5-6" caribes and ternz in the same size tanks, my heart almost dropped when I saw those.

i know its sad jack, but personally i would not buy it. i would get a gold diamond from aquascape for 85 and put it in your 55. you already have a blue so it would be cool to have another variant of the diamond rhom. im planning on getting a gdr and putting it in a sixty as soon as i get rid of my frontosas ( im only into piranha so theres no point in keeping them)

I think the inner demensions of a 55 standard are just over 11.5". I think it might be something like 11-5/8" so we'll round up to 12" even.
I'm going to say that rhom is a solid 6.5".
Whats common knowledge with serrasalmus rhombeus is that after this fish reaches around 6" in the aquarium, its growth slows down dramatically to about 1" per year (sometimes even less).

I would say that rhom would be ok in your 55 for around three years before an upgrade should be planned. I always try to give about an 1" to a inch and a half of turning space for the tail and for the head.

In short, if he makes it to 9" - 9.5", I'd get him in a new tank.

congrads on the baby.
Me and my wife are expecting in two weeks.

Hi.

As far as I can see it looks like a Xiingu Rhom.

Look if it was similar to this one:

If so it is, then we are talking about a Xingu Rhom.

If I were you and count on enough room I wouldnt think twice to get this beauty.

Cheers.

congrats on the baby. My fiance wants to start having kids in september...we're getting married in August.

I don't graduate 'til december... :(

I have never owned a rhom, but I plan on getting one as soon as we move out of this three hundred year old house and my floor can support the kind of tank needed to house a monster rhom. I've always liked the perus. I need to snap some pics of my LFS in MD. He's got some nice stock. I got my marg there (if in fact it is a marginatus, yet to be determined) and they regularly get 12+" pygos, and the occasionaly 12+" serra, and a ton of smaller pygos, smaller serras, and the occasional pristobrycon. Place is called Scales Tropical Fish. Nice place. They have over three hundred tanks, and a like 200 are QT in the back. If a fish is sick it never makes it out to the retail floor.

if you want to get rid of your frontosas I have an idea, put it into your BDR tank :)

I'll try to find out what it might be before I make decision cuz for $80 you can't really get any rhom at that size. they had the rhom there for a while may be can I work out a better deal with the guy that owns the store. not sure if I'll be able to get a hold of him cuz the snow is pretty bad here today.

I wouldn't have this issue if I had more tanks :irked: or more cash :irked::irked:

It doesn't look like a Xingu rhom, it's very hard to tell base on the lighting around the tank and the angle of the fish and the dirty glass. I think it looks a little more like a Guyana rhom, similar to the one in the pic below
index.php

but I'm not sure...
I'll try to find excuse to go to that lfs again later this week with my camera, hopefully will be able to get better pictures to help ID this rhom

Thanks. I would say hold on to the baby making until you secure a job. I just now realized how fast my new born goes through diapers, it's scary fast and diapers are expensive~!!!
which lfs in MD? is it Riverdale Pets?

Well said.

The term diamond rhom has just been slapped in front of the name for importers to get more $ for a fish, has no determination of species. A Rhom is a rhom.

What gg from pfruy has said, the term diamond rhombeus, is just like saying you have a green civic, instead of just a civic. Same car, just color is different.

You can pretty much put any title in front of the fishes name that you want, super black straight back green rhombeus :screwy:.... still will be a rhom
