What kind of tortoises should i get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Herman's Tortoises are cool and stay relatively small.

most species in the genus Testudo stay that size,i recommend you buy a captive bred specimen as they are generally much hardier

I'd suggest before buying a tortoise that you consider what it means to put a pet into your living will. If you are worth your weight as a herp keeper those animals will outlive you and see your children into their retirement years.

Not saying not to get one, just saying to look at it as the life long commitment that it is.

not all torts will outlive their owners, unless the owner is already middle aged..lol.

species like sulcatas, aldabras, galaps..etc will outlive you if cared for properly, but most testudo species(russians, greeks, hermanns) generally live 40-50 years in the wild, 20-30 in captivity.

Well right now I'm 15 and my step mom doesn't like snakes or lizards but she likes turtles and tortises soim not to worried about the tortoises outliving me. I like redfoots and also egyptians but egyptains, from what I read, coast around $400 so I think I will probably get a redfoot. But I do plan on getting a sulcata or a aldabra when I have enough room for it and also am able to care for it properly. Thanks for the sugestions:)

I think what you mean is 20-30 wild, 40-50captivity. Quite the commitment, most marriages don't last that long.
