I'm saving up for a wolf fish or a piranha species, but I'm really not sure which species to get. I've looked into aimara, but i feel like the price is dropping very low, last year they were going for 2k each and now i see some for sale at 600-900. I'm not really worried about aggression, but rather a interactive fish with personality. I've looked into hoplias misiones and some people said they were very active, but culdnt find anymore info on them. As for piranhas I've baught a sanchezi, rhom, and a school of rbp which all of them had been sadly big dissapointments. They were very inactive and skittish to a high level. If anyone knows a type of wolf or piranha which is overall a interactive fish please help me out! Aggression is a bonus! And red wolves, golds, and malas are out of the question. I've kept them before and did not like them very much.

Sounds like comparing apples to apples - more often then not it comes down to each fishes individual comfort level and their own unique personality. In general most of both species are ambush predators and or scavangers - they don't waste valuble energy for our amusement.

damn lazy fish lol

yea as what was stated above

BUT! there is 1 active wolf fish that isn't a ambush type. the common name is gold wolf fish, the vendor shark**** has em in from time to time around 100 bucks each, hard to come by. but worth the money, everytime he gets them in im broke or have no place for them lol. or i would get about 3-4 of them. nothing like having a wolf fish always swimming. they look the same as a red wolf but all gold and black. kool little killers they are.

if your looking at wolfish, im guessing you want an ambush predator...? so another option culd be getting a freshwater lionfish AKA toadfish AKA stonefish. but you would definitely want another fish in that tank as those move a very minimal amount and not active at all..

and by personal experience, snapping turtle are GREAT. i know its not really a fish but if you have the money and space for a big enough aquarium for him as he gets older, you might want to look into that. as babies they are very entertaining to watch as they are surprisingly active as babies. i had mine in a 10 gallon to start with a chinese algae eater (very quick) and he caught it even though the little turtle was only 2". they are predators their whole life.

Don't get a piranha! I have had all these over the last 22 yrs....... 10 x red belly's,1 x S.Compressus,3 x S.Rhombeus,1 x S.Sanchezi,1 x S.Geryi,2 x S.Manueli in the hopes of finding something along the line of finger chaser or bite off your hand when you put it in the tank kind of thing and everyone was a disappointment. They do nothing but hide in the corner, sit in one spot or bounce off the glass when you enter the room. If your only other option is a wolf fish then get an Aimara or Curupira. Both are active and the Aimara is more aggressive. In my experience I have had cichlids that have bitten me or attacked the gravel cleaner but that was usually because they had fry in the tank. The only fish I have had out of hundreds that has tried to bite my hand off and always attacks the gravel cleaner is...Drum roll............ABA ABA KNIFEFISH. Cool fish, swims with grace and will take your hand off if given the choice. Mine is only 20", wait until it get's 5 feet.

You gotta have the patience to grow em out to adult size. My mala is around 12" and bangs glass like an aimara if you get to close to the tank. I wouldn't call her active tho. Things do change they get bigger if you have the patience to wait or the money to get them when they're more mature.
