what kind or gar is this?

the guy at the LFS says its a South American Gar. . .

that is a spotted pike characin, not a true gar (members of the family Lepisosteidae are all true gars) but a member of the family Ctenoluciidae. they do remain smaller than gars, and are the better choice for relatively smaller tanks compared to gar enclosures.--

:iagree: Boulengerella maculata / spotted pike characin (a nice one at that)

get to about 12-13" WATER: pH 6-7.5 (6.8), 2-18 dH (6), 73-81°F (23-27°C)


they can be skittish and is easily frightened. The cover of floating plants is needed for the protection of the fish from jumping against the tank lid. The tank should be well-aerated.


FOOD: Live; fish, earthworms, large insects; pellets

huh...i have one of those in w/ my florida gar. i always thought it was a mosaic gar? i knew it wasnt a true gar but thought it was something different none the less. im glad i saw this! they are very skittish!!!

Dont see them too often in the UK, but have seen them occasionally non the less
 
hmm... its a "rocket" gar, we called it in asia here. We can see this kind of species EASILY in a aquarium dealer's shop, not that dificult to find them, what i mean was, this ROCKET GAR was kinda common in Malaysia. its bout btween U$1 to u$ 1.20, NOT KIDDING... :) not bad, kind of cute fish to me... i love gar fish.

i always thought the rocket gar was the hujeta gar?
 
to demjor19. well, i not really sure... but we people ( malaysian) called it as ROCKET GAR . but anyway, i'll try to find out soon, and get its scientific name.
