just wondering what kinds of african cichlids for a 30gal and how many? 2nd question how do i make make my water harder, and what kind of test kit should i buy?

i would add electric blue jahanis. you can use dolomite to harden the water.

Tanganyikan shelldwellers such as N. ocellatus. Crushed corals or oyster shells will work.

For a 30 I would suggest a small colony of victorians such as haplochromis ruby green, kyogoa flamebacks, or zebra obliquidens. The males get to about 4 inches and show great color and personality. You could keep a male with 2-4 females in a 30 gallon for life.
