Hello,

Just a question to those of you who may have knowledge on different types of aquarium lights. Currently in need of a suggestion to light an aquarium that is 84x24x24 for African Cichlids. Need a lighting system that isn't as pricey as a saltwater lighting system, yet has enough power to brighten up these fish. Also needs to have a timer and moonlight. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

a t5 system is about as good as it gets, bang for buck. compact flourescents work well but after having them, bulb replacement costs have made me switch to the t5 setups.

Do you know of one that has an automatic timer and moonlight?

It is easy to add a timer to any lights. You can buy a timer for 5 or 10 bucks.

H...T.....I was close lol...those be the ones :) And as stated the timers are available. There are a few different plugs on these thing and the timer surge protector is labeled real good and keeps your lights on a schedule for you :)

It may not be for everyone, but I recently got a cheap (presumably an off brand) 36" lighting fixture off ebay. It has 194 watts using 2 compact fluorescent bulbs. It has moon lights too. They have a 48" fixture with 260 watts and moon lights for around $115 on ebay too. You could have two of those and it would probably be enough to do a planted tank even. Only thing I would be careful of is putting these in a hood enclosure as they can get pretty hot.
