so i have a question what spectrum of lights do you guys think would bring out the red bellies of piranhas the best ? im adding some more light to my tank and i figured while i was at it i would replace the peice of **** bulbs i have on there which seem to wash out the red colour of the p's

ill have 2 twin bulb 4 foot t8 fixtures so im thinking of using 2 10000k bulbs and 2 6700k bulbs ive heard of great results with this combination for the colors of other fish but not so sure about piranhas what do you guys think ?

most of my lights are 6700K and one is 10000K, I think as long as the color is white it'll show the true color of the fish. if the color temperature is too low it'll be more yellowish, if the color temperature is too high then it'll be bluish.
I think both color temperature would be fine depends on which one you like more, also take a look to see what the color temperature is for amazonia sun through out the day, if remember correctly I read somewhere being 5500-6700K but I could be wrong.

color temp. is the same at noon for all parts of the world (5500k is daylight at noon) but as light passes through deeper water it goes up becuase reds and greens get filtered out and blues dont (not as fast anyway)

anyways i think ill go with 2x 10000k and 2x 6700k and make adjustments if nessicary i like the idea of bluish looking water and i can't stand this horrible looking purple color anymore lol

what's 6700k look like ? does it appear just white or a white with a tinge of blue/green ?
EDIT: found this on wiki if this is correct then 6700 would appear white with a blue/green tinge

take a look at this site in regards to different color temperature, looks like it varies depends on season and weather (overcast or not)

I couldn't tell the difference by looking that the light output directly they are all very bright and white to me but may look different under water.

this tank has two lights, one double strip on the left which has one 6700K and one 10000K, 30W each if remember correctly. don't mind the little purple you see on the right, it's some crappy 15W light came with my 10g and like you I hate that purplish tint, good thing I don't use it on that tank now.

this tank has just one 6700K 42W.

i think i can notice the bluish tint on the first tank the second one looks just white to me. so i think ill stick with my original idea of 2 x 6700k and 2x 10000k

thanks JP
