What makes an LFS good?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To me its variety of its fish. I will go crazy if all i will see are bread and butter fish.
I gotta have the exotics. Cleanliness of the tanks and overall general setup. People who work in the place has to know what theyre doing (fish knowledge and customer service ) and finally, the price should be reasonable.

Great topic btw...

Good prices.Lots of fish. Mabe a mix of Monsters and small fish. Good prices. nice owner, Fish knoledge. rarer fish. grown fish. both fw and sw. and OH YA Good Prices

1. No selling of dyed or painted fish. There's a great store in Phoenix called the Ocean Floor, a bit pricey, but they sell dyed fish without any warnings about how this is done. Hence I do not shop there at all, which is a pity, since they could make a mint off whatever fish the zoo might want!

2. No hybrids for sale without being labelled as such. Flowerhorns, etc.

3. Clean tanks, and tanks that have fish in them marked Not For Sale when the fish are ill.

4. Knowledgable staff.

5. Scientific names along with common names on the tanks.

6. Not just the bread and butter: give me some brackish fish, some wild caught angels, baby whales, elephantnoses the size of most adult oscars. Give me a reason to buy another tank!

And while not a key to making a great store, the most fave lfs of mine has a row of tanks with fish people drop off/donate/get store credit for. The tanks are labelled as such, and the prices lower than store stock, usually. It's great to find the oddball cory or tetra in there that I've never seen before!

variety and prices. I especially look for cheap deals on "community" fish like platies/danios/tetras/barbs/guppies/etc. for live feedings to my preciouses. These sort of fish do NOT warrant $1.99 pricetags; they should be 99 cents each.

Do you guys prefer the stacks of 10 gallon tanks? Would stacks of like like 33 long tanks be better?

What kind of filtration would you like to see? (I know I always dislike seeing box filters in stores)

As much as I wan to find good knowledgeable LFS is Singapore...very often I am left disappointed..No doubt, we have vast variety of fishes and exotics..but most (most, NOT ALL)..shops are treating the fishes as commodities only and alot of these shop owners have that 'U like it, you buy it, dun ask so much' kindda attitute.

I can say also...alot alot of these shops do not even know what is the type of fish they are selling. The just get the fish from suppliers...display any way they wan and slap a price tag on the tank. It is pretty much up to the potential buyer to do his own study on the fish and be responsible to know if he can keep that fish or not..

But I am glad that more 'new generation' lfs is sprouting out ard the area...and most of these are lfs owners with passion in the business...which is good...

The employees need to have at least basic knowledge about the product they are selling. The variety of fish available and their ability to "special order" a particular species of fish for you, is important. The fish should be maintained at optimal specifications regarding water conditions. The fish should be well fed, as well.

Additionally my favorite LFS would have a wide assortment of aquariums and related equipment at competative prices.
