What kinds of mantis shrimp are suitable to live in a 29 gal for life? Is there any differences between males and female mantis'? Such as size, aggression, color, or anything like that?

I have a 6" peacock mantis shrimp in a Deltec nano aquarium. He is awesome and very colourful always swimmimg around the tank

I've never started a sw tank before, so whats the minimum filtration equipment necessary? I'd like to setup a sump but the interior of my 29gal tanks stand isn't that big, it'd be a hassle to try to fit it all in there.

lol, you may find that with any setup theres never enough room lol. ive ran into that problem many of times. you will most likely need to build your sump as well. they make ones you can buy but the dont fit that well in most stands uner 36x18 so ive noticed. IDK maybe its just me lol.

I've read some other members from reef forums stating that a single bakpak2 would do the trick for filtration. Anyone here agree?

Almost all of them .... :)

You need a much larger tank to keep the big, burrowing Lysiosqullia "spearers" than you do the "smasher" species. They natural dig tunnels into the sand for ambushing prey.
I tried keeping a big Peacock in a small 8g "Nano-cube" but the water quality deteriorated too quickly. I don't know if you need a sump, mantis' are the cockroach of the sea lol I just used hang on filters and regular water changes.
