hello mfkers,
i have a eheim 2217/ut 159g on the way.
what media should i use in it? what is your setup?

its going on a high waste and hi bioload tank

mine came with media , yours should too . i just use what it came with , its supposed to be good stuff and if you had to buy it it would be some of the most expensive bio-media available . (the coco puff stuff) ... its ceramic , then pads , then coco puffs ....
how big is your tank ? alot of people use 2 2217's for 100 gallon + tanks ...

its 40 gallons, but it will be upgraded soon to around 100 gallons.

it has catfish and large goldfish in it

I use what mine came with: a layer of the ceramic rings, coarse blue pad, substrat pro, then a fine pad. I have mine on a 75g with an oscar and 2 tankmates, and it's barely enough. I'm upgrading to a bigger filter soon.

well thats cool if it comes with media.

i got it today, and it did come with media :D

all i can say is holy crap it is quiet! i never knew a filter could be so quiet

the media system could have used some work, there no trays. so i figure maitanence would be a PITA since the mech filtration and pads are on the bottom under the bio media. but that was easily fixed with panty hose. i put the bio media in little packets of tied panty hose, that way i wouldnt have to deal with hundreds of little balls to rinse out pads.

so far so good

Maybe you should have a look at their website or the manual

Cleaning 2217 is so easy with back wash. Take it to the sink, open the top, remove white filter and turn the inlet downwards. Either rinse with tap water or water from your tank. It doesn't have to be that clean as you want the bacteria to be alive. Replace the white filter and it's good for a few months.

I would lose the panty hose as this would get clogged first. Small washing bag will do if you really want to clean the blue pads.

I sounded like an Eheim salesman.

I replaced the ceramic rings with a few more blue pads. This made it easier to clean for me.
