I have this 180 set up, There is a florida gar, a red tailed cat and an Id shark. All around a foot. I know the id and the red tail I will eventually have to sell.

Im looking to keep 3-5 fish in this tank for LIFE. what can fit in this tank.... It is pretty bare. Here is the set up... (no fish in it when pic was taken)

It is very likely that you'll have to upgrade the gar's tank size at some point down the road, as well. As far as fish for life in that size tank, I'm partial to Rotkeil severums, Uaru cichlids, different Geophagus species, pike cichlids, and Vieja species; not necessarily all together! A lot of fish in those groups are unique, interesting, attractive and they will live in a tank that size for life.

IMO its too small for a florida gar too. Hey, neon tetras will fit in it for life.... I kid of course. Do you want a wet pet, or just monster fish? Because I'm fairly sure a lone red tail giant gourami would be a good fit for that tank. If not that, I would go large cichilds like frontosa or severums.

I'd go with some bichirs (but maybe add a little more cover?) for sure! :D Then a couple mid/top swimmers, and call it good. But I am biased, I LOVE polys.

Or perhaps a sting ray? I'm not sure on the minimum sizes for them, but I think someone said it was 180 gallons for the motoros? Don't quote me on that though :)

I don't know the minimum sizes for gars, so perhaps there is a smaller gar you could have in your tank for life? If not the "false" gars might be worth looking into like the spotted pike characin. :)

No rays...

in a 180...3-4 or more most CA/SA cichlids are be fine(nothing like umbie);
Lots of africans, Lungfish..Jardini alone...etc

Wouldn't a Jardini work in a 180? And I agree with adding bichirs to the bottom :)

2-3 gars would be awsome. It is my favourite fish. I knew the id and red tailed would out grow the tank and will have to leave. im hoping by then I have a 400 gal. But just incase I have to sell them before then I know what Ican restock my 180 with. mind you everyone is only about 15 inches right now.
