i tried and tried to find info on the web but could not, so here it is. i am doing a natural filter for an aquarium. it will be a tub 18" or so tall filled with cynder and or expanded clay pellets. there will be a leech style drip sytem a few inches under the surface and the bottom 6" or so will be filled with the top being wet/dry, meaning water will be continuously dripping through the middle layer and the top will be more or less dry. my question is what plants love a hydroponic environment like this, will use up as much of the available nutrients as possible, don't need to be fertilized,(which would kill fish) and will tolerate/maintain a pH between 6.5 and 7.5? the purpose of the filter is to keep nitrates, ammonia, nitrites, and phosphates as low as possible. i am thinking, cattails, water hyacinth, roses?, pothos(or is it a nitrogen fixer), or marijuana(unfortunately i live in the states though, so thats tentative). what does everyone think and what are you suggestions?
thank you.

Pathos and spider plants would work wonders with that filter.....I am not sure spider plant is the proper name of them...but they are green and white striped and throw babies on a long stem.....once the do this you can leave them attached and hang over the filter.....I have one on the side of my planted tank and the roots have grown heavily in the tank.
