i have a 45 gal. hex and the plec will be housed with a pair of firemouths. what kind would be good for life?

With firemouths, in a tank that small (surface area wise), I wouldn't add any large pleco. If you give enough hiding room for the pleco, any small species, under 5"SL, will work.

:iagree: kinda.

You have a really small footprint with a 45 hex, so I wouldnt get anything that gets bigger than 7-8 inches. I dont really think firemouth aggression would be a problem though.
Bristlenose is a great idea. Not many pleco's that stay that small.

An 8" pleco will likely stress the system to far, causing extremely bad water parameters. All Loricariids need very high DO levels, and a 45 hex is in no way able to sustain enough DO for a pleco much over 5".

I agree bristlenose plecos are great for smaller tanks, hardy adapt well to different water paramaters not demanding as to food and will stay on top of any algae outbreaks
