Any suggestions on what type of pleco to put in my 54 gallon planted tank?

I don't care if it does a good job eating algae
It needs to be able to live in this size tank for life
Needs to be good with plants

I don't want anything that's really common. I was thinking about the Gold Nugget Pleco or Sunshine. I'll only put one of whatever I decide in the tank. What do you guys think about either of those? I might be pushing it on size.

your tank may not be big enough for a L14 sunshine since they get 14" + dont hold me to this since im no expert, but 54g for a fish that can potentialy grow over 14" sounds a bit small to me buddy

Golden nugget, snow ball, sultan, medusa, and king tiger. Sorry i can't remember any of the L number or scientific name. 1 or 2 of the above plecos should live in your tank with no problem.

My recommendation would be a hyphan type which is more carnivorous, and hopefully would leave your plants alone. L333s stay small. Or you could try a leopard tiger L134.

What kind of plants do you have in your tank? I had a L264 sultan that liked to nibble on amazon swords, but kept the crypts and anubias alone.

I currently have 2 L114s in a 75 gallon heavily planted tank (anubias, crypts, java fern, moss, hygros); they are smallish but was told that when they get bigger, the plants will likely be demolished by them.

L14 will get too large for that tank. L128 aka blue phantom pleco would be good and probably won't tear up your plants. They max out around 7 or 8".

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The tank isn't planted yet. I just ordered my lights and will be adding the plants in a week or two. It will be all moderate light south american plants. I can't get any more specific than that till I order them.

Oh, and another reason why to stay away from Leporacanthicus sp. (L91 3-beacon, L-264 sultans, etc). They tend to do a lot of digging, so you may end up finding the plants you lovingly planted uprooted. One potential solution is to plant in pots, and not straight into the bottom of the tank.
