I'm trying to decide on what kind of pleco to get for my 75 gallon tank. Right now I have 2 Oscars ~6" each 1 GT ~5.5" a convict ~3" and a Jack Dempsey ~3" I know this is rather overstocked but I'm moving here in a couple of months and then will be setting up my 150 gallon tank. So I'm looking to add a pleco now that will be good for eating algae and some cleanup for the Oscars. So something that gets decent size so it doesn't become lunch like the common pleco I picked up a while back that was bite size for the Oscars. I do have a 29 gallon tank that I can put one it to grow out too.

With that stocklist I would agree with superleggera about the royal. They are herbivorous so you can feed them veggies such as zuchinni, sweet potatoe, etc. without all the cichlids outcompeting it for food. I have a carnivorous pleco with a 10" silver saum and I have resorted to hand feeding my pleco to be sure the saum does'nt eat everything. Unless you buy a larger specimen to begin with you will most likely need the growout tank. They grow REAL slow. 1-2" a year is fairly typical with a lot of your "fancy" plecos.

I don't think Royals are very good algae eaters. I'd go with a Gibby, IMO.

L-27, L-190,L-191, and L-330 are all L-#s for different Royals. Pterygoplichthys Gibbiceps(L-083) is a "gibby". And Benzjamin is probably right with saying Royals are'nt that good with cleaning algae in compared to a gibby.

Any juvenile pleco, no matter what species, can be eaten by a large cichlid. A common pleco of a decent size ( 6"+) should do well with your other fish. But if you don't want one, I'd recommend a sailfin, adonis, or royal pleco. All of these will grow to at least 16" and will clean your tank.

I'm aware that any juvenile can get eaten, I have a common right now ~4.5" and would just like something that looks better and that would be big enough to not get eaten by my Oscars that should be pushing 12" by the end of this year if not larger by then.

I'm probably going to see about meeting up with the guy who runs bluegrass Aquatics here in Louisville since he has Royals in stock according to his website and see what size he has and see about picking up one of the larger ones and if it's still on the small size putting it in my 29 gallon tank till it grows larger.

I just realized you live in the same city as me.:)
You should go to Pet's Palace on Bardstown road. I've seen some large plecos there.
