Plecs shouldn't be expected to "clean up junk build up on the bottom". They have specific needs just like any other fish. The only thing that's going to "clean up junk build up on the bottom" is you with your gravel vaccuum once a week when you do water changes. Plecs poop out 3 times what they eat. So even if you could get them to eat 'bottom junk' they'd poop it out in multiples.

Still no excuse to use a fish or anything else to do that job. Whether you like it or not, if you are overfeeding, you really have to control the urge to overfeed and feed appropriate amount only. Siphon the leftovers. This gives you an excuse to do a water change thus water quality remans consistently clean.

It's all right man alot of people make that mistake.

You can get a cheap common pleco that gets huge or get a species that stays smaller like a gold nugget but they cost alot more then your commons.

Search species by their L number.
