Hello I have an Oscar that I've had for about 6 years, yesturday I noticed her hanging around the bottom of her favorite corner but didnt really think much of it. Well today shes still doing the same thing and aftera closer look it seems she is guarding eggs. There on a rock and are white pretty much same color as the sand. After better examination of her she still has some eggs sticking out of her it seems. Now my question is is it possible for a fish to lay eggs that are not fertile? I have and only have had this one Oscar. The tank mates are tinfoils, clowns, silver dollars, tire track eel. I had a jack dempsey who died last week and 2 firemouths who died several weeks ago.

Bellow I have some pictures that I took. So do you think these eggs are fertile like maybe oscar/dempsey? What should I do now? Shes being more agressive then normal and banging the glass if I get to close and she wont leave the eggs. She seems to be leaving everyone else alone but no one has crossed the center of the tank.

When referring to eggs, use the term 'fertilized' or 'unfertilized'. Fertile/sterile is reserved for the viviparity of a fish (animal).

Anyways, yes they are eggs (very sure) and no they're not fertilized (they're white).

Also I doubt JDs can hybridize with an Oscar. Who knows, might be possible, but I highly doubt it.

Shes still guarding them and some of my fish are getting braver and trying to eat them mainly my eel. Would you guys suggest I suck them out since there not fertilized or should I just leave them. Either way I want to do what ever will be less stressful for the Oscar

Well so far she hasn't ate any shes just guarding them its the eel trying to eat them and thats pissing her off, hes hiding under the rock there on.

i think u should let them be in as after u remove them she will go mad searching eggs and can even kill eel as she has now figured out that eel is the one who is eating eggs.i would prefer leaving them inside as she will just figure out in few tries that they are infertile and she has to chunk on them :)
