So i have a very basic sump. There are really no compartments...the water falls into the 55 from the 180 where i have a bag a bio balls and a lot of filter fibers to catch debris. There are some grates then that separate the fibers from the pump. What else should i put in the sump to preform better filtration because my 180 is starting to get dirty to fast.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I would for sure add some filter socks, and have the water trickle over the bio balls if it isn't already. You could add some carbon also, I have it to help the smell. There are some good plants too but I don't have any to recommend since I haven't used them but I'm sure others can recommend a few. I think a few 200 micron socks will clear the water up pretty good.

you can add partitions, just glass and silicone. among other things, I went with poret foam from swiss tropicals. I have read nothing but good things about it. I bought mine already, but haven't set it up yet. if you went with some 4" thick you could just wedge them into the tank.
you could even use it as a divider to hold plastic pot scrubbies in place.

That is a great idea.
