I currently have 3 Oscars (until I rehome 2), and I have a gold severum. They are all between 2 and 3 inches in length. Obviously they will all get big very quickly and I'll just have a couple really big fish. I want some smaller fiah, preferably a small cichlid that I can pair up and have them breed. Convicts get too mean in my experience for fish like Oscars and severuma. What are some small to medium size species that will easily breed, but not terrorize my bigger fish?

What's the tank size for them in adulthood? Firemouths could work maybe.but any breeding cichlids may terrorize their tankmates that's just the way they are

Go with some type of peacock they are not to big and will not bother your other fish. Don't worry Africans and americans can co-exist with no problems.

I would just purchase a 20g and a breeding pair of convict cichlids or brichardi .............WIthin 4-5 months, the tank will have introduced you to the breeding cycle of cichlids........Mainly the care part and what to do with the fry.......

Are these "small cichlids" going to have to defend themselves from an adult oscar one day? If so, they can't be too small!

If not, I recommend kribensis. They never stop breeding!

If so, maybe some electric blue acaras. They just hit the market last year.

Oscars are vacuums.............Any "fry" project will need an extra growout tank..........Convict cichlids are the best startups...........WIthin a year you can easily have your own line..............I like keeping the males with the large forehead, called nuchal humps.................
