A friend of mine has a twenty gallon and i have given him many fish but lately i have realized how irresponsible he is. to him a tank is a maintanence free tank except for the occasional feeding his filter is noisy and filthy whith a filter pad that hasnt been changed for over a year. he lets the water evaporate concentrating the ammonia levels :( thankfully he doesnt have any cichlids to torture  what do i do! i am not gonna give him any fish and i am going to give give him the cold hard truth anything else i can do i feel really bad as his filter is actually a poison. :banhim::WHOA::irked:

Oh and i will try to get him on here

Like the Herpes commercial says "Knowledge is power" If he doesn't understand, don't give him any more fish.

educate him before tearing him down. thats the problem with these people who are new, they get torn down by more educated/experienced hobbiests so they ignore any help or info because they think its a shot at them. educate him but dont lecture him so he feels belittled.

buy him a book and tell him if he reads it youll give him a cool fish

I had a friend like that. I came over to his house, noticed the fish weren't healthy, and asked if he wanted me to help him clean his tank. I explained everything we were doing as we cleaned and why we did it. He totally felt bad afterward. Now he understands the needs of his fish, and has really cleaned up his act. He wasn't lazy, he was just misinformed/ignorant.

I agree with Cichlid2006. Too many people who would learn to keep fish the right way get treated like idiots when they unknowingly do something wrong, so they end up never pursuing the knowledge they need.
