Bought a channel cat today and I believe I left him in the bag in my tank acclimating him for too long. The first time I released him he looked awful and I immediately placed him in a large zip lock bag with a hose from my air pump giving him a lot of oxygen. So I released him again same thing happened placed him back in the bag. Left him in there for an hour he was swimming fine then I released him. He did well for a few minutes then was on his side again. So I just put him back in the bag and he’s swimming upright and looks good. Respiration is still somewhat fast but better then it was. Did I basically suffocate him? He seems to do great when he’s in the bag but when he’s released it goes south quick. Now I had a water accident and dumped a few gallons on my floor hence me forgetting the cat. Now would there be anything wrong with me keeping him in my tank in this zip lock with the air hose inside for the night?

I dont see why you cant leave him in the bag over night with a air pump. Iwould put him in a bucket with a air pump or filter could be him getting use to his new tank.

Are you acclimating with your tank water? Take some extra time and acclimate over the coarse of an hour or so. Eventually you will have replaced or diluted all the water you brought him home in and he should be fine.

I’m thinking about doing the bucket but worried at the temp. Lucky the bag has some small holes in it so waters circulating through it . I never would of expected this from such a hardy fish unless I bought a dud.

The first time I put him back in the water from the lfs the last two times I've used tank water. There seems to be zero issues when he is in the bag with tank water and the hose from the air pump. He swims fine then I release him and he lays on his side. I released him for about a half hour and he was on his side the whole time. Im not sure what the deal is maybe I almost suffocated him and his respiration was thrown off and he needs the oxygen now.

It will stay at room temp as long as in a warm room . You could wrap a old banket around the bucket if your really worried.

Not sure what Im going to do yet he still is pretty weak buts swimming better in the bag may just leave him like that for awhile or the night and see what happens. Hopefully its a positive result I've been at it with this thing since around 4 oclock

Well after having him in the ziplock for roughly three hours I released him and he's swimming around looks a lot better. Still breathing hard but I think that's because he's finally swimming around the tank and getting used to it probably really stressed. Hopefully I won't have to flush this guy when I wake up tomorrow morning.

How much was a channel cat this size and where did you get it? I want one eventually but can never find one this size. Looking good!
