OH...IO
I picked up two 10" FL gar from John about a month ago. What type of growth would you expect to see in 1 years time? I had started a thread asking who had the largest FL gar and it seemed that many felt FL gar would not obtain 24" in a home aquarium or if so it would take years to do so. So starting at 10", flash forward 24 months and I should expect a 14" gar? 16", 18" ? Your opinions?

thanks
KNH

I would expect around 18" after that amount of time unless your starving the poor thing. Once they hit around 18" they really slow down in the growth department, in my experience. Who knows, you might have a freakishly large growing florida gar. Either way you will end up enjoying your gar like all the other gar keepers on here.

18" is a good size gar. It seems like that may be on the larger side of the norm for MFK.

hi Kevin,

if your gar is 10" now, i think we could get you a better-informed estimate after seeing how large it is in about 3 months (this kind of gives a baseline of its growth rate in its current home).
that info aside, i think you're looking at around 18" or so as posted above, give or take a couple inches.
i currently have a Florida gar that is about 19-20" (haven't taken an exact measurement in a while, but nearly two years ago it was 18"). i didn't mention it in the previous thread because it was wild-caught by John, and i received the specimen at about 16" a few years back (so it doesn't fit the criteria of your initial inquiry reGARding "purely" captive-raised gars).

hope that info helps, but let me know if there are further details i can clarify. GO BLUE :) --

My florida from John seems to be growing slowly compared to my other gars. I'm not sure why, but it's about a foot now and was maybe eight inches a year ago.

Thanks Madding. I thought I would hear from people with slower growth.

I have 2 yoy florida gars that got about 6 months ago, will have to find the invoice to know for sure but they are currently at 12" and if I recall correctly they were about 3-4" when I got them. But keep in mind that they were raised in a pond with access to food 24/7.

current growout florida gar has grown from 8" to 12" in the last 6 months. have had fast growers too, from 6 inch to 17 inch in a year
