I've been thinking of hikari gold pellets, a few earthworms I dig up in the yard, and maybe some veggies for carotene if they eat it :screwy:

Make sure your sources when you try live foods are free from pathogens and pesticides that will prove fatal to your fish. Kensfish.com is your best food source. Affordable and can last you a few months if the foods are kept refrigerated.

pathogens

how do I test earthworms from my back yard for pathogens :nilly:(pretty sure there are no pesticides)

would store-bought crickets replacing earthworms work well?

Earthworms are fine but you could have used other live foods especially daphnia and feeders so I just added that warning as a reference for you. Live foods from sources with fish in them are likely to harbor fish lice, anchorworms, flukes, etc.

Crickets are fine.

if you want to make the crickets your feeding actually be nutritious rather than just a treat, you can keep a small 2.5 tub or whatever and "gut load" your crickets befor you feed them to your oscar. by gut load i mean. they have actual vits you can feed insects that then makes them a lil better but also feed the crickets lots of dark green along w/ orange and apples but sprinkle that stuff on the food that the crickets or meal worms are eating........most ppl just buy the crickets from the store and dump them in the tank. but if you take the time and keep them for a couple days max and "gut load" them your fish will enjoy a live meal while still making it good/better for him that say a feeder goldfish/guppy......just a thought. along w/ some good staple sticks/pellets he will grow like a weed!!
