Hey MFK

I am planning a FGT which will add up to about 700GAL.

Specs will be 6' 4' 4' with a Over head sump of 6' 1.5' 1.5".

Ill be keeping 8x birchers and 10-15x gars(not gators).

what will you guys recomend for me to fill up the sump with.

Ill need coral chips to control my PH

will be using full jap mats with coral chips be ok? Will i need cerimic ring or bio balls?

From my understanding is that bio balls are for trinkel i have been many pond canisters using it for submerge media, Is that even effective?

Thanks guys!

No, Bio Balls aren't very effective when submerged. Their strength is really breaking water streams down to drops making a large air/water surface area.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the commercially available bio media (rings, balls... etc.) Bacteria isn't that picky and just need surface area to colonize.

If It were me I would fill the top of the overhead sump with terrestrial plants. Pothos is a good one. They will convert the nitrogen compounds (ammonia, nitrites AND NITRATES) to plant growth. Submerged bio media will only break ammonia and Nitrates down to nitrates. Eventually you will have to get rid of the Nitrates (water changes being the most popular way). To remove nitrates with plants it is simply a matter of pulling off an occasional brown leaf and throwing it away before it falls into the tank water.
