Moved some fish around and now my 55 is going but empty in a week, so I was thinking of getting either a Midas or jag for a solitary fish, which is more personable??? Will eventually move into a 125 or larger once we move.

JAG! I just bought a 4"-5" one yesterday for $23 and he is one bad Mo-Fo. Really cool colors. Nasty attitude, especially when they flair up at the gills, looks pretty scarry! I'm going to have to take him out of my oscar tank and put him in a 55 by himself. Does not play well with others! But prepare yourself for a long ride cause from what I hear they can live 15+ years and the males can get up to 16" but very rarely happens!
I'm still trying to figure out what I want because the Midas they have at the store is a total bastard. He is just beating the piss out of the other fish, but I have always wanted a jag.
they are both awesome fish. how about this (might be a little costly though), you could order from Jeff Rapps (www.tangledupincichlids.com) and get a few small jags (eventually keep your favorite and sell the rest) and a male (or small group, either way) Amphilophus zaliosus (arrow cichlid). if you get them small enough you should be able to keep them together for a little while. however in about 6 months or possibly less you'll need to be moving the jags out into the larger tank and keep the arrows in the 55.
the arrow cichlid is a more open water swimmer than a red devil or midas. the arrow is also claimed to be more aggressive than either red devil or midas. the biggest pro to the zaliosus is that it won't grow as large...I think they max. out around 8". The con (maybe) is that they are not colorful like a red devil or midas but rather look like a barred version. the other choice would be to get a male pure red devil from Rapps. pure red devils don't grow as large as midas. I believe they usually max. out around 10".
You have heard correctly an arrow is like a red devil on meth, pure rage and evil but as long as you plan on seperating them in the long run it should work ok.
