What should I get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A Lima Shovelnose Catfish is a nice catfish that doesn't get as huge as the Tiger Shovelnose. A Pimodela Fourline Catfish would be more of a medium size catfish that if you got it more adult should get eaten by the arowana or the bass. Juruense is a nice shovelnose catfish its not nearly as expensive as the Tigrinus. Even big Raphael catfish should be able to go with those types of fish, although they hide a lot and you don't see them much. Big Synodontis catfish can be impressive and they have sharp enough spines that they should also go.

Is the lima shovelnose easy to get off of live food?
Is it aggresive enough to compete for food but not so aggresive it would stress the other fish?
How easy is it to find and how much do they usually cost?

My tank is 4ft tall and I am worried about a fish that a fish that stays at the bottom of the tank not being able to compete with the aggresive feeding habbits of cichla.

thanks for the help so far, I really want to find a catfish that will work in this tank but I will not get one unless it is a perfect situation to have said fish.

I've had a couple LSN and they both ate pellets and frozen seafood. They're pretty commonly tank-bred AFAIK.

Even with you guys help I still messed up.

I abandoned the idea of getting a decent sized cat for the bottom of my tank to get a huge school of silver dollars instead to keep my tank clean. then I went to 50fathoms in New orleans and they what I thought was a lima shovelnose and bought it.

But here is the problem, It was a tiger shovelnose. Now I cant go back to return it for the next month and my LFS would probably sell it to someone with a 55gal.
