I was wondering what peacock cichlid to get I am wanting to spend no more than 200 at the max. The purpose of these fish will be to breed and I will sell them any money I get will go into a fund for that tank. I would like to get a small pair and grow them out to save money. The tank is a 125 with an emperor 400 on it (soon to have a 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]) 6 jewel ciclids 2.5 inches 6 clown loaches 3inches 1 seven bar frantosa 2inches and a 3inch algae eater.

The tanks is going to be (when completed) a peacock tank.

First of all, a pair has little success with polygamist cichlids like those from Malawi. Pairs CAN work, but more times than not it doesn't and the female loses. Secondly I can't recommend any Aulonocara to be mixed with riverine cichlids - unless the riverine are going away.

How about getting 2-3 males and 6 females of a popular species...For variety you can put a group of something unrelated like a group of P.Acei or yellow labs in.

Just remember with peacocks, you have to invest a lot time and money to get anywhere - and the only ones people want are the males. Expect offspring to take a few months of grow out before you can even sell them - with males needing to be colored up to get any decent money for them. Aulonocara are not a get-rich-quick fish.
