Definitely check the prohibited species list, although that tank would be nice for piranhas

The only type of wolf fish illegal to California is the common wolf fish but the red wolf fish is legal to keep

you should get the fish you find most interesting that you can properly care for.
can't care for them after they've been confiscated and you have no money left over from paying fines
