So I'm heading out later today to look at some retic "teacup" rays I have never owned a ray before. From doing my research I've learned to watch them feed before buying them, are there any other things I should before buying? Besides the obvious like color and overall looking healthy. Thanks

I would ask how long the ray or rays have been in the store if they say something like 2 weeks or longer that's a good sign that they are healthy you mentioned you did research but Ill just throw it in here anyway just check to make sure there's no indent in between the eyes hip bones aren't popping out and also an active ray is a healthy one. Also ask what temp they are keeping and pH so you can match that with your tank as close as possible...just curious to ask what size tank do you have any and what will be the rays tank mates?

I have a 90 gal set up right now but I have a 180 that will eventually be set back up. I was thinking just 1 ray with maybe discus. When I got there today they had 2 rays 4-6" the smaller one looked great he was active he was feeding good but there was a problem with the larger ray he had a small wound right above his eye and some damage around his outer edge. Being that there in the same tank I don't feel comfortable buying one

90 should be good for a little while but yea get that 180 going...i understand your concern since they are in the same tank did they say how it was wounded? but your prob better safe than sorry you can always check back in a week or so and see if the smaller one is still available

No they didn't know what happened to him, it almost looks like something attacked it but they just had discus in with them so, maybe heater burn. I will check back in a few weeks also shopping around online. Yeah I really want my 180 up but still trying to convince my wife to let me put it up. She wants it in the garage. It is heated in there plenty of light too but I want it in the living room....I eventually will win.lol

newly aquired retics can sometimes be abit finicky in regards to feeding and getting them to settle into new environments. This is probably not the best advice but motoros are generally easier to acclimate. That being said, as long as you keep your pH slightly acidic with a fairly thin substrate and keep the lights off for a day or 2, they should settle in ok.

Lol well good luck keep us posted and I hope you win the battle for the 180

What's the growth rate of the motoros, could they live in a 90 for several month's. They seem to be readily available and they are so beautiful

Well I can tell you one thing for sure they are easier to care for then retics "teacups" as far as growth rate Im unsure but believe it varies from ray to ray but if your purchased a pup at say 4-6 inches in size I'd assume it be ok for a few months as long as you keep a close eye on water levels because in a 90 they could turn quickly
