What should my top-dweller be in a 65g preditor tank?

Hey all, I have a recently cycled 65g (36x18x24t) with two ropefish (soon to be four) and a sen. bichir. I need a/some top dweller(s) tough enough to hold its/their own, but passive enough to leave the polys alone as well.

I like butterfly fish and I read all over the place that they make good tank mates for bichors, but I currently have a very unhappy butterfly with half a tail missing in a fry net just purchased today that proves otherwise. Not happy.

My lfs has a hujeta gar, but I'm keeping it in mind as a backup. I REALLY like gar-like fish, but most get too big. Anything gar-ish is neat, but has to stay under a foot!

I hate cichlids. I hate anything that even looks cichlid-like. <3

Anyone have some suggestions?

Also don't want 'sharks', leaf fish, anything particularly discus-shaped...or anything particularly fish-shaped. I like oddballs, hense the snakey ropes and lizard-like bichir.

Anyone care to take a swing at this ball of fickleness? XD

I'm not sure of your budget but here are some ideas for fish, you could go with the hujeta pike or perhaps some chalceus either the pink tail or the yellow tail or if you can find them Toxotes blythii. They would be mostly surface fish but you might want to get some mid level fish for your tank, perhaps some Myleus Schomburgkii.

I looked up your suggestions, but I don't really like the look of them^^ As for budget, I have no money but I somehow always manage to get what I want >> It helps to trade when I can.^^

Thanks for your suggestions! And I'm glad you think the hujeta works, cause I don't know any more about its compatibility with my tank than that poor buttefly.

Hahahahaha lol maybe u should get a turtle or frog.

Just jokin man, I get what you mean.
How about some pike livebearers? The females get to 9 inches and they kinda look like gars.

Get a few of one of the Apollo sharks (Luciosoma sp), terrific suface fish with real attitude. Would need a bit more space when they got bigger but look great, don't see enough of them appearing on these forums ;)

If you dont mind feeding live fish you could try some Crocodile Fish(Luciocephalus aura). They are oddballs that dont get too big. I was going to get some but they fish store could not get them to eat anything but guppys. I have a Butis Butis/Crazy fish in my 55 gallon tank that stays near the surface while hiding on plants, tubes an heater. I would suggest the Butis for sure if you can fine one. Also some African Butterfly fish are cool an never leave the surface

I also have 3 ropes, 2 butterfly in my oddball tank

Arowana is a top dweller and a perfect match for your setup I would think.
