I have just purchased a 5" air disc to go in my tank, I have hooked it up to my air pump which is rated at 4.2 litres per minute and the air stream coming out is pathetic. I have seen a pond air pump rated at 55 litres a minute :WHOA: and was wondering if that would be ok or to powerful ?

You need to look at what size tank the pump is rated for, more volume equals more pressure equals bigger pump.

I run the biggest RENA air pump they make on a pair of those disks in my 75. Output is adequate. Anything less, and I think it'd be under powered.

A pond air pump is something to look at if you need anything more.

Hi blow for me, they keep the water moving. Cheers

I have a 40lpm pump running 4 1.5" airstones and a 2.5" disk like you are talking about. I can direct all the air to the disk and it will turn the water into a rolling boil, but spread out they are all what I would say about medium. Mine is based on a 24" deep tank. I think my pump would just barely run a 5" disk with a good stream of bubbles. Just remember you can always choke it back if its too much but you can't make it output more.

Here is a pump similar to the one I have. It is very quiet too. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AQUARIUM-PO...049?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a16db4831
