what size can festae cichlids be sexed???

hello i want a female festae but rapps has them at 1.25-1.5inch size can these be sexed at that small size???

not really but look for the eyes sport arround 3 inches as well as differt colouring the female have no bluespeckleing on their fins or very little

I have 11 festae all around 1 inch and I am already seeing subtle differences in them. This may not be very reliable, but some fish are showing the dark half of the dorsal fin characteristic of females.

Buy 4 and hope to get a female. If they're all males. Sell those 4 and buy another 4.

i wouldnt care what sex i got. either have a better looking imo male or a less attitude and less tank space female. win win

Females are slightly overrated if they aren't in a tank with a mate. Pre-spawning colors are downright amazing. Solitary female festae seem to be washed out. I started out with 5 of that size from Rapps and ended up with 4 females and 1 male. It's all in the luck of the draw.
