what size do convicts breed at? i just got a pair, male and female for sure, with beautiful fins. there about 3 in and follow eachother around the 125 endlessly. what size do they breed at and what are some things i should do thatll help and what behavior signs should i watch for

I have gotten viable clutches from convicts as small as 1 1/2 inches tops. Parental care can be a bit shakey with the young parents however.

I had my first clutch when they where about 5 cm in length, don't know what that is in inches. However like ^^^ stated, parental care is shaky. It might take a couple of tries to get some survivors. My first clutch all hatched, leaving me with 200+ fry, but none survived due to shaky parental care after hatching.

cool thanks for the help guys, what do you feed? any cold water changes?

To be honest, with the number of baby convicts I get, I do not do a lot of anything extra in caring for the fry. I guess I am sort of unintentionally selecting for viability and vigor. Too bad that a large number of them end up as food for some of my other fish.

I don't do cold water changes as it doesn't seem to do anything for them. As for food, I just feed the adults sera vipan and sera spirulina tabs. The fry get special food... As in finely ground down sera vipan... That's it. I am not too worried about survival of all the fry. I would rather that the strong and healthy fry survive to keep the fish strong and healthy.

A couple of flat stones seem to be the favored egg laying site here, so maybe that will help. Other than that, just let nature take it's course....

what do you keep them with that eats the fry?

The smallest pair I have ever had was a half inch female breeding with an almost one inch male...........COnvict cichlids will breed in a 5g HOME DEPOT bucket, litterly.............Just stick an airstone and small heater inside of it...........The most basic setup will be a 10g with a samll clay flowering pot set on its side...........An extra tank will be needed to raise the spawn to saleable/feeder size..........A 20g LONG or better, a 55g is the ideal size to raise a spawn to two months old..........Two months is the perfect size fry are ready to be sold or traded..........The fry at around one month are fine to feed as small treats..........

there in a 125 community tank.... id love to see pics
