What size for venting a texas cichlid?

Visually my Texas Cichlid looks male, but i want to know for sure, i am thinking of venting him to be positive. He is about 4-4.5" is this a good size to determine what sex he is, or is he still a little to small to tell? I only use "he", so i didn't have to refer to him as "it". No need to vent and you have a male for sure. Females always get the blue spot on the dorsal and you always know once the fish hits 3''. Nice looking texas!
