What size heater do I need for a 500 G

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You're probably going to need a lot more than 300W. I am running 1,000W on my 500 gallon setup and it is indoors.

General rule is 2.5 watts per gallon. Also 2 heaters are a better choice than a single, this way you have a back up in the event of one failing. A single 300 watt probably will not be enough for a 500g. I would be looking for at least 2 500 watt heaters to be safe. But some of the heater makers would want you to go even bigger if you look at the recommended specs. They would probably want you in the 800 watt heaters x2 (most rate these for up to apx. 250-260g each)

Also I just had a thread about heaters for my 150 and everyone seems to recommend titanium heaters, something to look into, btw i purchased two 300watt heaters on ebay for a total or 28.80 shipped if youre looking for a good deal, The firts one is the one I just bought but i cant tell you how it is cause i bought it yesterdfay, the others are also good deals $40 for 3 shipped!

1000W for a 500 G indoor? That's a bit odd unless you have your heater on low setting?

I run the temps right at 78. With titaniums, it is better to go a little on the high side. If you undersize the heater, you could burn it out.

I originally had 1,500W on it.

OK i just picked up another 300 watt Odyssey heater at the LFS since i cant a few days wait for shipping to arrive. Now my water is at 70 degree. I have all 3 heaters on maximum setting. Hopefully they wont get burnt
