what size heater for my tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
200 watts is enough for a 55, i have used up to 300's in mine, and as little as 200 aswell.

would a 250 stealth do the trick?... would it be best to put the heater allt eh way at the bottom horizontal... so that heat rises form the bottom and spreads better because its closer to each side of the tank?

position wouldn't really matter as long as you've got decent water movement.

I have found that quality heaters, like stealths, do MUCH better than higher wattage crap. I've got some cheap 300w heaters that heat my 55g up to 90*+ even if they are turned all the way down. A 200w OR 250w stealth would heat much more effectively. Also you have to think about the room temp. If it's already 75* in the room, then you wont need a whole lot to get it to 80* or so.

3 watts per gallon rule meaning that a 165watt would be ideal but every heater I've ever heard of goes up per 50 watts so 200watt would be perfect. You shouldn't need any more than a 200watt unless the room you keep your aquarium in is really cold. From my experience visi-therm stealths and ebo jager heaters are the best for the money. If you get them at the right places a 200watt shouldn't be any more than $20 try bigalsonline.com I know that the ebo jagers say do not submerge but everybody on MFK says you can but I don't and the 250watt heats my 60g fine. DO NOT BUY CHEAP HEATERS! I just lost a fish last night from some penn-plex glass piece of crap that decided to turn my water to 98*. I wouldn't trust a heater thats more than 50watts more than I need, I'm always afraid of frying my fish. If you don't need the extra wattage don't get it! It costs you more, it uses more electricity, and you never know if its going to heat up your tank too much.

200 is enough!

200 would be fine even if your room temp dips into the 50s Thats what I had on the 55 in my kitchen and it gets cold in there when I dont keep the fire stoked

I have a 1 stealth 250 on my 125g and it holds steady at 80 degrees, so yes a 200 will be more than enough.
