I recently bought a huge tank for extremely cheap from craigslist. I got tank lights hood stand and decorations for $50. The tank measures 72x18x30 from each outside edge to the other. The glass is between 5/8 and 3/4 inch thick. I was told that it was either a 130 or 140 gallon tank but the guy wasn't sure. After using some online aquarium calculators i have come up with 168 gallons and 170 gallons using those measurements however when taking off the measurement of the glass thickness I get only about 140-150 gallons. So can someone please tell me how big in u.s. Gallons my tank is? I am pumped to get this thing set up tomorrow. Floor has been reinforced and I have everything but a background and will be filter shopping next week for something besides three HOB filters. Any ideas for filtering something of this size would be greatly appreciated. I have never been outside of the 55 gal realm yet. Btw it will be home to seven red belly Ps. Thanks in advance.

For future reference, there is an accurate aquarium volume calculator on this site. It is the 5th option at the top of the page next to the "M" symbol, and says "Conversions".

Your tank is technically 168.55 gallons, but it's possible that it was sold as a 140g; different companies will call their tanks different things, for example a tank that is 225 gallons is often called a 210g, 220g, or 230g just depending on where you got it from, but all of these tanks have the same dimensions (72x24x30).

your calculations are correct why do you need the exact gallons? and trust me your tank is not huge it's a grow out tank and filter for some of the guys on here.

I didn't know if the glass thickness took away from the gallonage.... So it will actually hold 168 gallons of water?!? DAMN... you don't understand that is very huge to me.... I was planning on only about a 110 at max originally but not gonna complain, except for the fact that the thing weighs close to 300 pounds empty. I wanted the gallons for calculating the amount of weight it was going to be placing on my floor.

You did the calculation right. I have the same exact tank im using to grow fish out but I keep calling it a 150g for some reason:screwy:

No one can calculate the exact volume of water it will hold unless they're psychic or something. The only way you could find that out would be to figure out the exact volume your substrate, decorations, filters, etc. will occupy, then subtract that from the inside volume of the tank. Then for the exact weight, you would have to weigh all of the decorations, substrate, etc., then subtract the volume of the substrate & deco. from the inside volume of the tank, and then multiply whatever number you come up with by 8.35, then add your 2 numbers together to get the total.

But for a very general calculation, get the inside volume of the tank and multiply it by 8.35.

Haha that's crazy I'd love to have the ocean in my house like some of you guys but my girlfriend would drown me in it if I did lol.... So what type of filter is recommended canister, sump, combo of filters etc. Like I said this thing is a whole new world to me btw I am on a slight budget so I was considering a diy sump for filtration. Thanks alot for the replies though

For filtration, I'd do either 2 Rena XP4's or 2 Cascade 1500's. The Cascades will probably be cheaper, but they aren't the same quality either (although they'll still do the job).

what he means is he messurd the outside. he doesnt know if the calculators counted for the glass.
I know, but the point I was trying to make was that it really doesn't matter whether the glass is accounted for because there are other factors that would effect the exact volume more than just the glass thickness.
