What size pump?

The normal turnover rate is usually suggested at 5 times per hour, but it really depends on the numbers and size of fish, and the type.
If you were stocking with small labyrinth type fish such as gouramis and bettas, a 500 gal per hour pump might be sufficient.
If you are thinking riverine cichlids such as oscars, a 900 to 1200 gph would seem to me minimal.
If reophillic fish such as Retroculus or Theraps, a 2400 gph.
If you want African Tiger fish, they come from the Congo river that moves between 23,000-75,000 cubic meters per second squared.
And this all depends on numbers, lightly stocked less power, heavily stocked obviously much more as a general rule.
