im thinking of buying a wet/dry filter, sump. what size wet/dry do you think i need? any ideas will be appreciated

What size tank do you have?

I believe the size of the actual sump isn't necessarily as important as the amount of bio-media it holds. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think you would want about 2.0-2.5 gallons of bio-media (volume of course) per 100 gallons of tank. This is just a baseline, and I would definitely recommend buying/building a sump with as much volume of bio-media that you can fit in the alotted space.

With most of us mfk'ers going about 4 gallons every 100 gallons is more realistic : P.

One of the most important things is how densely stocked the tank is going to be. It it is going to look like a pet shop or an Asian tank, you will need a fairly large sump. The general rule of thumb is 30% of the tank, and your worries will be solved (Asian stocking needs 50% and larger).

Off the shelf sumps are sized way too small for my comfort. When the manufacturers start competing against each other, they tweak the numbers to be in their favor (not in your best interest or your fish's).

BWHAHAHA Asian style. Yeah, I bought a sump "rated" for a 300g for my 140... And It's not quite Asian style.
