What size sump?

Tank size should be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 of the display tank. For a 55g a 20 to 29 gallon would provide plenty of bio load for your setup.

As far as pump size, the GPH should be able to turn over the tank 3 to 5+ times an hour. 55x4=220, so a pump rated at 300 to 400 GPH will be about right when you factor in the height it has to pump.

Depending on what you want to stock it with, you may want to change things a bit. This is all I have come to understand, hope it helps.

bigger is better. while a 29 is large enough for the bioload you need enough room for syphon backflow when you lose power and a mutlitude of other issues. the minium i would put ANY sump is 55 it might sound rediculous to have a 55gallon tank with a 55gallon sump but itll make matinence and building easier
