I'm gonna be setting up a 450 in the next couple months, and will be using my first sump system. I will have someone design, build and install it and explain everything to me because I only have experience with large canisters. My 2 questions are what size sump (gallon wise) would be suffice for a 450? And does the sump have to be drilled?

The sump can run without drilling the tank with a INTERNAL PUMP. But, the GPH/TOR would depend on stock.

And I would run nothing lower then a 180gal sump, but it also depends on your stock.

Community tank with severums, geos a couple of bass and a few other ca/sa cichlids.

Should be fine with a 125 loaded with bio balls and matrix. Run 2 internal pumps on it incase one dies there is always a second running.
Is the tank drilled with overflows?

I would look at 125 and I would drill it.. Mine is about 125 gallons w/ abio tower and i run 2 external pumps for the same reason John mentioned

Jay you have a 500 gallon right? if so do you have additional filtration added with the sump

the 450 has 2 corner overflows and other holes drilled in the back/sides

I do- I have a bio tower that runs into the sump- the only additional filtration is the socks and a uv filter. If you want i can give you the number to the guy who built my systme and you can have him give you a prioce and options. If you wnat to see pics the thread in my sig has a lot of them.

UnstoppableJayD - I see you are located in NJ. Can you PM the information for the guy that built your system. I am actually in Northern NJ and looking to build a 250-300g system. Thanks!

I've heard a "rule of thumb" for this is the sump should be 20% of the tank size. But, that would mean an 80 or 90 gallon sump for your tank, and I wouldn't try to run 2 submersible pumps and filter socks in a 90 gallon. I'd go with a 125 or larger sump for you.
