what size tank would i need to house 5 arowanas? (one silver and four jardini)
i have them all in a 125 gallon tank now....
and should i use gravel or no? cause i heard if you dont have gravel they get drop eye and if you use gravel its harder to clean... please help me out with suggestions :feedback:

I'd say a 10 foot by 10 foot pond would do the job, in the long run. I wouldn't even think to keep 5 big arrows in a 500g.

bad news

i read on http://www.aquariacentral.com/species/db.cgi?db=fresh&uid=default&ID=0435&view_records=1
they were peaceful so i got them plus its not everyday you see them in florida... i think they are illigal here... o well they are pretty neat... and the pond idea i dont like cause i heard they jump out soo i dont want to loose any.... i was thinking 500-700 gallon tank... but the problem is the funds to buy one of those suckers they have a 540 gallon tank on ebay for 2100 after shipping and its acrylic....

here is the age old question..... which is better acrylic or glass? i curently have a 125 acrylic but it scratches easily so i dont know...

Mostly Silver Arows. will develop the drop eyes, i rarely see a silver without the droopys. The Jardini's and the Beautiful Asian Arows. seem not to have that problem maybe 1 out of 100 fishes, but you can try to prevent that by floating a ping pong ball on top of the water to keep there eyes from looking down.
And about Arylic or glass? I Definately prefer ACRYLIC!! Glass will tend leak in the long run... and you never know when the BIG one will hit.. But lets not hope for it to happen!! :)

500 gallons would do well with those aros. Remember that silver aros grow really big

I second the idea of a in ground pound

picture this (my dream) not in michigan of course, but have a 10 x 15 ft pound about 3 ft deep. simple filtration system, small trees planted on the shore with branches overhanging the pond. 4 or 5 arow's (2 males, 3 females) let nature take its course.

Please remember that wild arow's don't usually develop drop eye or look down syndrome because they are SURFACE FEEDERS.

I've raised arow's for a couple years and it only takes feeding an arow something not on the surface to create this problem. To surely prevent this problem buy a hatchling with the egg case and raise it to adulthood.

best of luck

You can get an above ground pool setup for less than a grand .... comes with pump, sand filter, ladder, etc. For prep and install count on 2 or 3 people working 16-20 hours total. Mine is 24' diameter and 12,500 gallons.

Too bad the wife insists on keeping it for swimming in....

I think you should go get that 9,000 gallon tank. =)
