I am looking into getting some rays, possilby motoros. I was wandering what size tank I wil need. I plan on getting some top dweller as well. HOw would a 125 work? Thanks

depends on the size of motoro you are getting. if you got a 125Long, and a 5in motoro pup and very good filtration. I would see 2 years, give or take 6 months.

A 125 would work perfectly for pups.
Adult Motoros can clear 30in plus in disc diameter so they will need much larger.

All rays require ample space.
You could always build your own indoor pond :)
Save yourself the headache and build it once. 8'x4'x2' is great to start with if you have the room now. (Trust me, you will thank yourself for it. It will save alot of work!)

I am assuming you are new to rays.
Remember when it comes to keeping rays research, knowledge and dedication are key. This forum is a great place to start.
The stickies here have some information to get going on. After that I would recommend literature by Dr Herbert Axelrod, and Baron's. Both books will answer many of your questions, as well as inspire many more.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Good luck and welcome to MFK! :)

yo man good luck with the ray. I tried a retic out but i didnt do enough research and it ended up dying on me. make sure the tank is well established. and dont make my mistake by not putting the heater vertical. make sure its vertical or else u could end up with a badly burnt ray like mine was. and with a motoro, u will have to upgrade for sure after it gets to be an adult. u can raise the pup in the 125 for maybe a year and a half to two years but after that you will have to upgrade.

we will do this the easy way when your ray gets to 10-12" your 125 of 6'x18" will be too small....

Maybe it is just me, but I can't keep pups in a 125 for 4 months without them turning into giant eat-everything-that-moves monsters. I honestly couldn't say that well-fed, stimulated rays kept in clean water could for sure stay in there for very long at all. It is just my experience, and of course this might not be the case with scobina/hystrix/retic/etc.

Thanks for all the feedback guys and gals. That starts my next question, my WIFE isn't going to go with an indoor pond. What rays don't get as big as the ones you guys mentioned. I could always get tank bigger than 125, but not much bigger. Any other sugesstions?

YES! You could get a rubbermaid tub, or a nice display tank! I've gotten both, and they were important stepping stones to getting my wife to allow me to get the x2 623 gallon tanks that we currently have sitting in our living room. :)

If you need some tips for winning over a spouse to ideas like that, I honestly can hook it up. If I were you I would go with a smaller ray for now (hystrix, scobina, etc) because of the limited max size.

About how big do you think she could go for? An 8'x3'x2' is 360 gallons, and you could get one that sits on a really sweet stand. We have one in our living room, and a neighbor told us that "it looks like something you would see on cribs", which I'm assuming is a good thing.

Thanks alot for your suggestions. I think I am going to look for a 180-210 tank in my area then slowly accumulate the other neccesities, i.e. filtration and lighting. I done a little research and I think the hystix are pretty cool. First things first get a tank!
