This is not necessarily a how big for this fish type question.

I'm considering building a new tank. I've been enjoying reading many of the plywood tank builds and think I could easily build one as I live above a woodworking shop which I've spent a good amount of time in. I'm not sure why I didn't think of it before.

I have a 55 gallon and a few 20 long breeder tanks currently. I'm thinking of building a large new tank to be my centerpiece so my 55 can be moved over to fry raising duty.

I've decided my absolute maximum size is 8' x 3' with unknown height.

I'm wondering if a 6' would be more practical or if I should go full Monty and do an 8 footer.

Part of the desire for a new tank is my new found love for Arowna's. Simply amazing looking. Especially the Asians. Hope they become available someday. But obviously my 55 is a far cry from what is required for an adult Arowana.

So can I get a few opinions.

Go big, no one ever complaines about having to big a tank. As long as the floor can support the weight. imo if anything is going to restrict you it will be the floors ability to hold the weight.

The floor is designed for heavy storage. And the location of the tank is near a wall and directly above a support beam. Bout the strongest point of the 2nd floor.

I spoke with the guy who desinged the building. He said as long as its near the walls it should be fine as the bucks are bolted into a block wall that is pour solid with concrete.

Even if I get it up to 4,000 pounds which I won't and 8 x 3 base would drop the pounds per square foot to 166. I weigh that much and can jump on any single point anywhere on the second floor and damn near break my ankles. No give at all. It's an overbuilt building.
