I have an extra Ocean Clear canister I would like to put into service. I have one set up on my tank (210g Mbuna) with the standard cartridge in it.
I bought the filters used as a set, the one I'm looking to do something different with came with an integral UV light - the UV part is dead, light no worky and the UV housing is cracked, I'm guessing it got wet where it should not have. I do not want to spend the money getting the UV back in service but I would like to do something with the canister.
My thoughts: replace the UV lid with a standard lid and fill the canister with ????? I'm not sure if I want it before or after my currently operating Ocean Clear. Thinking after and fill it with a fine media and SeaChem Purigen for water polishing? Or maybe before my existing filter and use a more porous sponge (Poret foam?) to act as some sort of a mechanical pre filter and add a little bit of bio filtration? If I stuff it with something other than the designed cartridge how do I deal with water flow inside of it? I want to make sure I'm getting the most out of whatever media I end up putting in it.
FWIW - I do not really need any more bio filtration, I'm thinking more along the lines of keeping the water clearer. Of course any added bio is always good.
Anybody have any creative thoughts or other good ideas to use a spare OC canister for, uhm, besides a planter
