What species of softshell?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Get a shot from the top. I'm guessing spiny, based on all those bumps(aka spines) at the edge of the shell. Not patterned enough to be a Florida, so I'm betting spiny.upload_2018-3-31_0-31-7.jpeg

I would say Its probably a spiny but it could be a hatchling Chinese. do you have anymore information like where you got it and or more pictures from the top and of it in the water?

Apalone Ferox....florida softshell... can tell by the yellow on the head and the faint pattern.

Dude, just look at the freaking thing's nostrils/ top of carapace already. Like said, I would be shocked if it isn't a spiny.

surprise....haha... 100% not a spiny... not even close. These are native to Ohio, ive owned both spiny and florida.... theres a small chance it is infact a smooth softshell...but i put my $$ on florida. not all floridas have pattern. those are bred like that...the majority are just a dull brown color... males are also more prone to pattern.

C Chicxulub what do u think? i know u prob see apalone ferox on a daily basis.

Definitely not a spiny soft shell from what I can see idk where everyone’s getting that impression looks like it’s got characteristic of both Florida and spiny from my understanding there are hybrids of the two but if not I’m leaning towards Florida soft shell growing out of his/her color or it’s a non native I’m unaware of.
